submitting my film

We’re looking for 11-25 year olds who have a story to tell through film.

Submitting your film is free, and all you need to do to qualify is currently either live, work, or study in Hertfordshire. Films can be sent to us via our submission portal via the button below! They will then be viewed and selected by a panel drawn from the world of film and the creative industries.

Hertfordshire Film Festival will take place at Watford Palace Theatre on Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th April 2025, with the submissions window now open until 1pm on Friday 17th January 2025.

Selection process

Films will be split into two age categories; 11-17s and 18-25s, and chosen based on:

The idea

Is it original and creative? Keeping it simple often works best.

The story

Does it have an engaging narrative that captures an audience, without using shock factor or adult themes for effect?

The sound

Are the sound effects, music, and dialogue clear, and do they add to the narrative? (The unauthorised use of copyrighted music or sound will mean we cannot select your film.)

The visuals

Do the appropriate use of camera angles, framing, movement, lighting, costume, props, and locations all work to strengthen the narrative?

The audience

How engaging is your film to an audience, and is it suitable for screening at Hertfordshire Film Festival? (For example, if you are submitting a film in the 11-17 category, then your film content must be appropriate for viewing by the whole of this age range.)

The following types of films will not be considered:

• Training videos
• Music videos
• A behind the scenes 'making of’ film
• Trailers, extracts of longer films, or incomplete films.
• Straightforward recordings of arts (or other) events
• Film clips made solely for the purpose of curriculum learning (such as record and playback)
• Video diaries (unless used creatively within a narrative) or vox pops

All other film genres, themes, and styles are welcome, as long as your story is engaging and clear - so delve deep into your imagination.
